History of Football Kits

Early football teams played in shirts similar to that of cricket. Initially teams used a variety of different designs like the great Bolton Wanderers team of 1884 wore white shirts with red spots before switching to red, white and blue stripes. On the other hand Blackburn Rovers wore blue and white halves from the very beginning in 1875.

In the 1890s football shirts had settled into a few standard designs which included plain, stripes, hoops and halves. Clubs normally would wear long flannel trousers but at this time began to abandon the idea in favour of knickerbockers. Charlie Roberts of Manchester United upset the F.A by wearing very short knickerbockers which resulted in these eventually being known as shorts.

Numbered shirts first began to appear in English games in 1928 but it was not until the 1938-39 seasons that clubs were forced to wear numbers.
